Canon Looks To Add Thunderbolt To Camera Line [Canon's Top End Cameras May End Up With Thunderbolt Card Readers In The Near Future]

The word in question comes from Hiroo Edakubo, head of Canon’s Video Products group, who actually came right out and said that the company was “excited” about the Thunderbolt technology, and also that Canon thinks adding Thunderbolt to their gear will improve performance and make things a lot simpler, both of which are certainly true.
It’s clear that adding Thunderbolt to their cameras will up the performance; Thunderbolt’s capability to offer 10 gig transfer speeds will make short work of huge quantities of files, be they video or regular photos. Whether it’s a camera or a camcorder–both Canon staples (they’ve been making both for years)–Thunderbolt will certainly improve the performance.
However, some have suggested that one holdout may emerge in the form of Canon SLR cameras, which have for years used FireWire connections on the video end and USB on the still end, which does pose a bit of a problem. Canon probably doesn’t plan to switch them over until Thunderbolt gets a lot more widely used. This is something of a shame, but considering how few computers have Thunderbolt, why make an SLR line compatible with only a few cameras, especially when FireWire and USB are already doing a good job?
Still though, it’s safe to say that Thunderbolt card readers will become huge, and of course, the more Thunderbolt users there are, the more demand there will be for Thunderbolt devices, and in turn, the more devices there will be that use Thunderbolt.
So look for Canon to start tacking on Thunderbolt to a lot of its tech on the order of pretty soon–there isn’t any word yet as to which devices will get the technology or how much said devices will cost–but still, it’s only really a matter of time until they start hitting.
